If you’re a user of Prestashop, it’s natural to be curious about the new Prestashop 1.7 version. Want to move to the 1.7 version but not sure about the additional benefits the new version offers?
It’s best if we look at the differences between the old version and the new in order to figure out what we’re in for. That way, it becomes easier to take the right decision.
Let’s find out!
Prestashop 1.6 was built using Bootstrap. If you create themes for selling on Prestashop’s Add ons marketplace, you have to use Bootstrap as well. However, with Prestashop 1.7, a completely new store can be made from scratch using any kind of theme you wish. This may be a bit tricky and complicated, though.
This is most due to Prestashop’s reliance on the framework of Bootstrap in order to make their ecosystem work. Prestashop users need to rely on compatibility no matter what version they use. Hence, the versions do not have much difference in this aspect.
If you have some modules you built with Prestashop 1.6, you can probably use most of them on 1.7. This excludes payment modules, whereas there’s been a tiny change in the API. You may have to tweak the presentation code to make this work and still look pleasing.
3. Templating Engine
For versions 1.6 and the one before, there was just the Smart templating engine. In 1.7, there is the addition of Symfony’s Twig engine. Legacy and front office themes are what Smart specializes in. Twig is used to write up new back office pages.
Modules, though, can use the template engine of their choice. This was already possible in the 1.6 version of Prestashop. Using an engine other than Smarty was somewhat complicated before; the 1.7 version clears up those tangles.
The main new deal in Prestashop 1.7 is that we can create shops and list our products much more easily than before. The user interface has become more user-friendly and it’s much easier to maintain a theme within the shop as well.
The new version also improves the administration section, making it simple to use. You can hence create and install your products and modules with less hassle.
There is also some code framework that stands to be completely remodeled. This will make the whole process faster, smoother, and even more efficient for business needs.
